The Portuguese school vocabulary parents need most fits on one index card: matrícula (enrollment), encarregado de educação (the guardian the school deals with), diretor de turma (the teacher who coordinates your child's class) and falta (an absence). Under Portugal's Estatuto do Aluno, Lei n.º 51/2012, the encarregado de educação is whoever has the child living with them or in their care, through parental responsibilities or a court decision (Observador, citing Lei 51/2012). That one term decides who signs forms, who gets the emails and who is called to meetings. Around it sit a handful of phrases for the school office, a polite script for a teacher meeting and the shorthand that shows up in notes home. Learn those and the first months of school in Portugal, for expat kids and their parents, get much quieter. Below, we follow one realistic family through enrollment, a first message and a first meeting, then pull out the exact European Portuguese they needed.
A first month in a Portuguese school, start to finish
Picture a family that has just moved to Porto with a ten-year-old and a six-year-old. The national online enrollment windows have already closed, so a parent walks into the secretaria (school office, roughly skr-tah-REE-ah) of the local agrupamento de escolas (school cluster) with passports, a folder and a hopeful face.
The clerk is kind and quick. The parent catches three things: encarregado de educação, comprovativo de morada (proof of address) and the dreaded volte amanhã (come back tomorrow). Tomorrow, with the right paper, it works.
Two weeks later an email arrives from the diretor de turma inviting parents to a reunião de pais (parents' meeting) at 18h30. The same week, the six-year-old comes home with a recado (note) asking for an autorização (permission slip) for a visita de estudo (field trip).
Then the ten-year-old admits Portuguese class is a blur. The parent needs to book a one-to-one meeting, in Portuguese, about Portuguese. Every step of that month runs on vocabulary you can learn in advance.
Which Portuguese school enrollment language do you need?
Online enrollment runs through the Portal das Matrículas, and the Ministry of Education staggers the windows by grade. For the 2026/2027 school year they were:
| Grades | Enrollment window (2026/2027) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Preschool and 1st grade | April 22 to June 1, 2026 | Portal das Matrículas, Ministério da Educação |
| 6th to 9th and 11th grade | June 16 to 29, 2026 | Portal das Matrículas, Ministério da Educação |
| 2nd to 5th grade | July 1 to 13, 2026 | Portal das Matrículas, Ministério da Educação |
| 10th and 12th grade | July 15 to 24, 2026 | Portal das Matrículas, Ministério da Educação |
Those windows have closed. The 2027/2028 dates will be set in a new despacho, so check current dates on the Portal das Matrículas before you plan. When you enroll, you must list five schools your child could attend (Doutor Finanças, citing Despacho n.º 4472-A/2026), and have your ID document ready. If you arrive mid-year, ask the school or the agrupamento how places are handled.
The words on the form
- matrícula (mah-TREE-koo-lah): enrollment
- renovação de matrícula: re-enrollment for the next year
- ano letivo: school year
- jardim de infância: preschool
- 1.º ciclo: grades 1 to 4 (said primeiro ciclo)
- encarregado de educação (een-kah-reh-GAH-doo deh ee-doo-kah-SOWNG): the guardian of record
- comprovativo de morada: proof of address
Phrases for the secretaria
- Bom dia, queria matricular o meu filho. Good morning, I'd like to enroll my son. (Use a minha filha for a daughter.)
- Que documentos são precisos? Which documents are needed?
- Pode escrever, por favor? Could you write it down, please?
- Para que ano? For which grade? Answer: Para o 5.º ano (quinto ano).
How do you handle a teacher meeting in Portuguese?
A teacher meeting in Portuguese is mostly polite openings, one clear question and a lot of listening. Knowing who you're meeting is half the battle.
Who you'll meet
In the 1.º ciclo, your child usually has one main teacher, the professor titular de turma. From 5th grade on, each class has a diretor de turma (dee-reh-TOR deh TOOR-mah), the teacher who coordinates the class and talks to parents. Ask for the horário de atendimento, usually a set weekly slot when they receive parents.
A script for the meeting
- Gostaria de marcar uma reunião. I'd like to set up a meeting.
- Como está a correr o ano? How is the year going?
- Ele está a ter dificuldades a Matemática. He's struggling in math.
- O que posso fazer em casa para ajudar? What can I do at home to help?
- Pode falar um bocadinho mais devagar? Could you speak a little more slowly?
A short exchange might sound like this:
You: Boa tarde. Sou o pai do aluno novo do 5.º B.
Teacher: Muito prazer. Ele está a adaptar-se bem.
You: Que bom. E o Português? O que posso fazer em casa?
Teacher: Leiam juntos dez minutos por dia.
You: Combinado. Obrigado.
Notice está a adaptar-se: the European pattern of estar a plus the infinitive, with the pronoun after the verb. That's what you'll hear from a teacher in Lisbon or Faro.
What Portuguese school vocabulary do parents see in notes and messages home?
Most school communication arrives as short notes, emails or messages on the school's platform. The same few words repeat all year.
Absences and lateness
- falta (FAHL-tah): absence
- falta justificada / injustificada: excused / unexcused absence
- justificar a falta: to excuse the absence
- atraso: lateness
A simple excuse note: Venho por este meio justificar a falta do meu filho no dia 12, por motivo de doença. I'm writing to excuse my son's absence on the 12th, due to illness. Swap in da minha filha as needed.
Trips, meals and after-school
- visita de estudo: field trip
- autorização: permission slip
- refeitório or cantina: cafeteria
- lanche: snack
- ATL: after-school care
- AEC: enrichment activities in the 1st cycle
- material escolar / manuais escolares: school supplies / textbooks
Grades and the calendar
- teste or ficha de avaliação: test
- nota: grade
- período or semestre: term, depending on the school
- interrupção letiva: school break
Breaks are set nationally. For 2025/2026, Christmas break ran from December 16, 2025 to January 5, 2026 (Doutor Finanças, citing Despacho n.º 8368/2024).
Why are so many classmates also learning Portuguese?
Your child is rarely the only newcomer in the room. In the 2024/2025 school year, foreign students made up 15.5% of all students in Portugal, and 16.2% in basic education (DGEEC, Perfil do Aluno 2024/2025). Schools now average students from 19 nationalities, and in 2023/2024, 41% of schools had 20 or more (Ministry of Education data via Crianças a Torto e a Direitos, September 2025).
That helps parents too: teachers are used to slow, careful Portuguese from the other side of the desk. Support for non-native speakers is called Português Língua Não Materna (PLNM). In 2023/2024, only 10,638 of 55,827 eligible foreign students in basic education were registered in PLNM classes (Conselho Nacional de Educação, Estado da Educação 2024), so it's worth asking: O meu filho tem apoio de PLNM? Does my son get PLNM support? We cover kids' language support in more depth elsewhere on the blog.
Brazil is the most represented foreign nationality, per the same DGEEC profile, so your child will hear both varieties at recess. Lessons and textbooks use European Portuguese.
What should you practice before the next note comes home?
A quick recap of the phrases that carried our Porto family through their first month:
- Queria matricular o meu filho. I'd like to enroll my son.
- Que documentos são precisos? Which documents are needed?
- Qual é o horário de atendimento? When are your parent hours?
- O que posso fazer em casa para ajudar? What can I do at home to help?
- Venho por este meio justificar a falta... I'm writing to excuse the absence...
- Pode falar um bocadinho mais devagar? Could you speak a little more slowly?
Your challenge: write one excuse note today, even for an imaginary cold, and say the meeting opener out loud three times. Sou o pai or sou a mãe, the grade, the class letter. Done.
In Pois Pois you can type a topic like reunião com o diretor de turma and get a dialogue, quiz or story about it in European Portuguese, then have Sandra, our AI tutor, explain in English and correct your excuse note answer by answer. You can try it free for 7 days (the card isn't charged during the trial, cancel in two clicks), or set up the family plan at €25/month for up to four people, so your kids practice at their level while you practice yours. Compulsory schooling in Portugal covers ages 6 to 18 under Decreto-Lei n.º 176/2012, so those notes home will keep coming for a while.
